Our story

One family.
One Ria.

Since 1989 we have been raising fish in the Vale da Lama tidal ponds, inside the Ria de Alvor nature reserve. Two generations, the same respect for the rhythm of the tide.

Where it all begins

The Ria de Alvor is a nature reserve between Lagos and Portimão. Our 10 hectares of tidal ponds lie within it, just a few metres from the sea, where salt water flows in and out with every tide. It is this place, stable and full of life, that gives our sea bream the flavour and texture that set it apart.

A place that cannot be made

Between the hills and the sea, the Ria works with us.

We do not rush nature’s pace. The tidal ponds work as they always have: the tide comes in, the tide goes out, and the fish grow in their own time.

Timeline

Nearly four decades in step with the tide.

From the first tide in 1989 to the research project we coordinate today: the same family, the same place.

  1. 1989

    The beginning

António Vieira begins raising fish in the Vale da Lama tidal ponds, making use of the Ria's traditional system.

  2. 2nd generation

    The family carries on

Leonardo Vieira joins the business and brings fresh energy, without changing what matters: time, space and respect for nature.

  3. Today

    One species, one focus

Between 100 and 120 tonnes of sea bream a year, at low density, harvested by hand and delivered within 24 hours.

  4. Tomorrow

    Innovation with roots

We coordinate Aquadiversify: fish, algae and sea cucumber in the same system, here in the tidal ponds.

The team

The people behind the tide.

A family business is made of people. Those who raise, harvest, select and deliver: this is the team that, tide after tide, looks after the Vale da Lama tidal ponds.

What guides us

Three principles, since day one.

  1. 01

    Respect the natural rhythm

We let the tide renew the water and the Ria feed the fish. We do not rush what needs time.

  2. 02

    Care for every fish

Low density and harvesting by hand, so that every fish arrives whole, fresh and with the quality we expect of it.

  3. 03

    Protect the Ria

We farm inside a nature reserve. Researching and reducing our impact is part of the job.
