A European project to conserve and restore the seagrass meadows of the Portuguese coast. On the Ria de Alvor, our contribution is to bring a former salt pan back to life.
The project
Coordinated by CCMAR at the University of the Algarve, LIFE Restore Seagrass works across six Natura 2000 sites on the Portuguese coast, among them the Ria de Alvor, to conserve and restore seagrass meadows and the coastal lagoons where they grow.

Our role
We are restoring BioMarim, a former salt pan beside the Ria, to turn it into a space for growing and demonstrating seagrasses.

Project targets across all the sites where it operates, as registered with the European Commission.

Who is involved
Universities, public bodies, associations and companies come together in a single project. Piscicultura do Vale da Lama is Pescalgarve.
Why they matter
They shelter juvenile fish and many other organisms in the early stages of life.
Their roots bind the sediment and protect the seabed from erosion.
They store carbon in the sediment, which makes them important allies in the fight against climate change.
